Call for new club members
6:30pm Wednesday 12th September 2012 in News
MORE people are being urged to join West Dorset Fencing Club in Bridport .
The club’s founder Shirley Parker competed in the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo where two British men Bill Hoskyns and Allan Jay took silver medals in the sport.
Mr Hoskyns and Mr Jay both previously held World Championship titles at foil and epee and are actively involved with the Bridport club. A young Hungarian coach has also become involved with the club and courses are being arranged for beginners as well as experienced fencers.
The club has been in existence for less than four years but the enthusiastic members are working towards competing at county level soon.
The club meets in the sports hall at the Sir John Colfox School in Bridport on Thursdays from 6pm to 9pm during term time and will be starting again tomorrow, September 13. A club spokesman said: “There is virtually no age limit, but probably the best time to start is around 12 to 14 years. “This does not mean that over 20 you have no chance and the club also caters for smaller children from the age of eight.
