Youngsters at Bridport ’s St Catherine’s Primary School arrived for the start of the new school term and discovered two new classrooms had appeared during the holidays.
But it wasn’t magic – simply an effective collaboration involving all the local primary heads and Dorset County Council to help satisfy the growing demand for school places in the Bridport area.
The new classrooms were blessed in a special ceremony by local parish priest Father Richard Meyer, watched by pupils and staff.
A ribbon to mark the opening was cut by the oldest pupil Rosa Grew-McEvoy and the two youngest Lettice Busby and Poppy Grier.
The new classrooms mean that the school has ten extra places and will now be able to hold single-age classes throughout the school, with two additional members of staff.
All the building work was completed during the long summer holidays.
“This is a very exciting time for not only St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School but all the primaries within the area,” said headteacher Frances Guppy.
“The expansion at St Catherine’s has come about through all the local primary heads working together with Dorset County Council to provide the best educational choices to meet the growing demand for school places in the Bridport area.
“Our thanks go to Dorset County Council for their support and funding, Interserve as the main contractors, everyone who worked so hard in a short space of time to achieve this.”
