Work to start on Beaminster tunnel

TUNNEL: work to start TUNNEL: work to start

BEAMINSTER Tunnel could be extended either temporarily or permanently following the landslip last month which killed two people.

Engineers will begin the long process of finding a way of reopening the A3066 Tunnel Road on Wednesday August 22.

They plan to drill 25 metre deep boreholes as part of investigations of the land around Horn Hill Tunnel.

Options on the table include adding an extension, or temporary shield, to the existing structure while stabilisation work goes on.

Traders in the town say they appreciate that the safest and quickest solution must be found, but are calling for a better idea of the timescale for the work.

Dorset County Council is looking at one long-term solution by stabilising the hillside using a technique called soil nailing - but this will only work if the underlying ground is appropriate.
