IT may have been more than half a lifetime ago but two Bridport Land Army girls received official recognition of their war efforts this week when Bridport mayor Martin Ray presented them with their Land Army commemoration medals.

Pamela Letchfield, 78, and Irene Jenkins, 92, both live in residential home Sidney Gale House where they enjoyed a celebratory tea dance in their honour.

Mrs Letchfield joined one of the first land armies in Guildford where the memory of digging deep and planting hundreds of carrots remains strong to this day. But she says being in the open air more than compensated for the backache.

Mrs Jenkins was sent from Liverpool to work on farms near Winchester in Hampshire and was particularly fond of threshing.
