WOODROFFE School pupil Jason Dickins will see his green design all over town from Saturday as eco group Turn Lyme Green launch their reusable shopping bags.
The group's first campaign is to make Lyme Regis plastic-bag free with the introduction of reusable, fair trade, cotton bags, which will be made available to every household in the town on Saturday with the Great Green Bag Giveaway.
The bag features a logo designed by 14-year-old Jason, whose simple but elegant idea was chosen out of all the entries from Woodroffe students by four judges from Turn Lyme Green.
Candida Blaker, who headed the judges, said: "The year 10 class at Woodroffe, under design teacher Mike Greenhough, produced lots of wonderful and inspiring ideas for logos.
"There was hot competition for the winning entry, but the four judges all agreed that Jason's design was simple and eye-catching - well up to professional design standards."
Jason, who is considering a career in design, is 'very pleased' to have produced the winning logo and said the fossil in the middle represents Lyme and the Jurassic Coast, while the circle stands for the idea of recycling.
"I kept it simple because I didn't want to crowd the design," he said.
"I do worry about green issues like plastic bags and also global warming which may have caused the dreadful flooding around the country this year."
All the entries from the year 10 design students will be displayed at the Marine Theatre today, when Turn Lyme Green officially launches.
The free launch event starts at 7.30pm with an introductory speech by environmentalist and Lyme resident Sir Ghillean Prance, who is also the former director of Kew Gardens.
This will be followed by a screening of the BBC natural history unit's film, 'Message in the Waves', which shows the carnage that is caused by plastic bags in the Pacific Ocean, and there will be a panel discussion.
Everyone who attends the launch will be offered a Turn Lyme Green cotton bag.
The launch is followed on Saturday by the green bag giveaway, with street entertainment around town between 9am and 3pm.
