A HORROR film made on Portland has been picked for a screening at a festival in Los Angeles.

Underland was made at Southwell Business Park by Bournemouth-based director Gemma Paul, of Twisted Root Productions, and shot on Portland.

It is described as a dark tale inspired by Alice in Wonderland, centring on a Mad Hatter character who lures girls to a tea party.

The short work was the only non-American film selected for the Lady Filmmakers Festival, which takes place in Beverly Hills from September 28-30.

Former makeup artist Gemma Paul spent six years in business before setting up Twisted Root Productions earlier this year.

She says she made the film for fun with no idea it would end up being noticed in Hollywood.

Gemma said: “My dream has always been to make and work in film. Film has always had a special place in my heart. So to have a film, my first film, selected to show in Hollywood is unbelievable and a genuine dream come true.

“I am proud to be able to go out to LA and represent women in film and fly the flag for British female filmmakers.

“It’s been like a whirlwind the past six months. I have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure I am not dreaming. I am going to Hollywood where they will be showcasing my first film. Words can’t describe how I am feeling at the moment.”

She added: “I just want to thank everyone for their support and assistance in helping me put the film together.”

Underland has been picked up by producer Tony Newton, who said: “It was literally a stunning short. The cinematography was superb, has everything a good horror short needs. Really brilliant, loved it.”

Southwell Business Park will also be the location for the company’s next film, Adam, this autumn.

The next production will feature several local actors and crew including actors Tim Faraday and Warren Hicks.

Twisted Root is looking for funding opportunities and investors to help take its films to the next level.
