TWO silhouette statues have been unveiled in Chickerell.

The silhouettes are of an RAF Airman and a suffragette, celebrating the centenary of two milestones.

The mayor of the town, Cllr Lynda Wise unveiled the statures, which are displayed on the verge in front of the town council offices.

The RAF airman is in support of the Royal British Legion ‘Thank You’ campaign marking the final year of the First World War centenary and recognising all who served, sacrificed and changed our world.

Cllr Wise said: “100 years ago the guns fell silent on the world’s first truly global war. The example and experience of those who lived through it shaped the world we live in today.”

Also being celebrated is 100 years of women’s suffrage and the centenary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act – Votes for Women.

Cllr Wise added: “I’m delighted with this appropriate memorial for our community; it’s an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made for us all.”
