A gardening club experienced a good turn out to their show, despite fears the weather may affect numbers.

Bridport and District Gardening Club saw more entries than last year at its Late Summer Show, with visitors attending from Bath, the West Midlands, Surrey, Wirral and Shrewsbury.

Ann Brown, show coordinator, said: "Earlier in August, because of the drought, we were anticipating a poor show. However, having seen how wonderful Beaminster's Horticultural Show and also Melplash were, we were hopeful that ours may also be a success.

"We were not disappointed, with the number of exhibitors up on last year at 57 and 464 exhibits.

"The hall was a picture of summer colour and the scent of roses.

"We have even managed to encourage some of our new garden club members to exhibit, and win."

Long-serving member of the club Ann Rogers was tasked with presenting the trophies, with organisers wanting to thank her for work she has done.

The big winner this year was Alan Finch, whom the Bridport News reported on last month for being the first man to win trophies for cooking and preserves at the club's shows.

This year, Alan went one better, winning the Bob Mills Memorial Cup for overall show winner with the highest score in all classes, plus The Salon Culinaire Salver for the highest score in Homecraft (cookery and preserves) classes.

Stephen Tribe was runner up in all classes and won the E M Page Perpetual Challenge Cup for second highest score, The Fowler Cup in fruit classes, and The Bridport News Challenge Cup for highest score in the vegetable classes.

New exhibitors Tim Gale and Valerie Sparrow won trophies in Other Flowers and Photography.

Ann said: "The show committee would like to thank all the volunteers and those who donated the refreshments, raffle prizes, plants and their time to organise and run the show.

"It was a happy occasion for volunteers and exhibitors alike, thank you."

Those that attended showed their generosity, with the charity plant stall raising £242, which will be donated to the Sidney Gale House Amenity Fund.

Bridport and District Gardening Club shows are open to all, not just members, with the club's Spring Show set to take place on Saturday, March 30.
