A town is turning its back on plastic.

Turn Lyme Green presented Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) Awards to six Lyme Regis businesses last week as the town celebrates ‘Plastic Free Community’ status.

The Galley Kitchen, Red Panda, Amid Giants and Idols, Lyme’s Fish Bar, Baboo Gelato and Swim were the first businesses in Lyme Regis to ban three single-use plastic items in their shops and restaurants and replace them with environmentally-friendly alternatives.

The awards were presented by Grenville Barr, chairman of the strategic group for Plastic Free Lyme Regis; an initiative of Turn Lyme Green.

Grenville said: “This is a significant milestone for us in recognising key businesses who have made changes and contributed towards Lyme Regis achieving ‘Plastic Free Communities’ status. Our work continues with other businesses as they source alternative products to use, and we engage in the community and with local schools to raise awareness about the alternatives to consumption of single-use plastics.”
