Frustrated residents have told of their anger at disruption caused by gas works.

People living at Fishweir Fields and Wellfields Drive in Bridport say the green space outside their homes is being used as a ‘dumping ground’ while work is carried out by SGN on St Andrew’s Road, with work materials and portable toilets stored on the grassed area.

One resident claims there was a lack of consultation prior to the work, which started in July and is expected to continue until November, and it has left them feeling ‘fed up.’

They said: “Lots of people did not know this was going to happen. There was no consultation. I understand work needs to be carried out but the work is on St Andrew’s Road, some distance away.

“Three or four years ago we had the same thing happen on the green area and we had just about recovered. Now we’re thinking ‘not again’. There are toilets outside people’s lounge windows and building materials are being stored there. There is concern they won’t clean the place up after them and we’ll be left with the dust, dirt and oil. It’s a mess and it’s unsightly. We’re all fed up.

“The kids haven’t been able to use the area all summer."

County councillor Keith Day has visited the site and says it’s a ‘real mess.'

“I have raised the issue with the county council,” he said. “Residents have done all they can and there is very little else that can be done now – but we want to prevent it from happening again in future.

“I have a great deal of sympathy for these residents; I would not like a toilet placed outside my living room. It’s caused quite a bit of damage and children have been prevented from using the area all through the summer holidays. We have got to make sure this does not happen again.”

SGN says residents did receive notice of the works in advance.

A spokesman for the company said: “In consultation with Dorset County Council, we agreed the location of the storage compound to run from Tuesday, July 3, while we carry out our gas mains replacement project in the area.

“All St Andrew’s Road, Wellfields Drive and Fishweir Fields residents received notification of our works and the location of our compound in advance.

“Our project is progressing well and we expect to complete our work and clear our site by Monday, November 5.”
