An open day at a fire station proved so popular that organisers confirmed it will become an annual event.

The team at Bridport Fire Station welcomed the general public to come and join firefighters at the station to help raise money for charity, as well as try and get some volunteers to sign up.

Alongside highlighting the hard work that they do, it also opened the public's eyes to the importance of fire safety in the home.

Bridport Fire Station manager, Nicholas Courtice, said: "Our open day at Bridport Fire Station was a huge success with lovely weather and a large turn out from members of the public.

"We had a great response with requests for home fire safety visits where after watching our live fire demonstration, people realised the importance of fitting and checking smoke detectors which the service will arrange for them free of charge."

Various demonstrations, such as learning how to use the fireman's hose and a chip pan fire demonstration illustrated just some of the tasks the station has to do.

Activities the team were organising, such as the crockery smash and cakes stalls proved hugely popular, as well as a charity shop, with plenty of children leaving with a momento from their visit.

Through the different stalls, the fire station raised £957 for The Fire Fighters Charity, who help to support thousands of beneficiaries a year through their broad range of services.

Services include rehabilitation, health and wellbeing, nursing, information and support service, and much more.

The event proved so popular, that the team at the station decided to make it an annual affair.

Nicholas said: "Bridport Fire Station would like to thank everyone who helped us in any way, particularly those who donated prizes or took the time to bake a cake for our stall. See you next year."
