Plans to commemorate a town's fallen heroes have taken another step forward following a donation.

The donation was made to Churches Together in Bridport and District to fund one of six silent soldier statues which commemorate the soldiers who gave their lives for their country during the First World War.

It was made by Bridport Classic Bike Club, who presented a cheque for £250, enough to sponsor one statue, to Reverend Philip Ringer, who was representing Churches Together.

Paul Ackerman, member of the Bridport Classic Bike Club, said: "We are proud to support this as most members had a relative involved in the First World War and some still have friends and family currently serving in the forces.

"Bridport Classic Bike Club regularly supports other charities across the south west along with most other motorcycle clubs which help to raise tens of thousands of pounds each year."

The There But Not There silent soldier statues are being placed around the country to commemorate 100 years of the war ending.

The soldiers will stand at Harbour Green in West Bay and honour the lives of six local men who lost their lives in the First World War, which came to an end 100 years ago this November.

The installation will see life-sized statues on display from Thursday, November 1 until Thursday, November 15 as an act of remembrance for those who died during the four-year conflict.

The men the statues will be remembering are Robert Buckler, William Gape, Herbert Gush, Richard Glare, Frederick Hoskins and Alfred Oliver.

Reverend Philip Ringer said: "We plan to have them lit at night, between 4pm and midnight, and I think they will stand out very well. We need to have them lit. I think it's still important to people because we have inherited a legacy of the sacrifice so many people have made. Many men were lost, and West Bay also lost men."

Each statue costs £250, and the money was raised by the club through a motorcycle ride, which had 23 stalwarts turn up and complete.

It was one of the several charity motorcycle ride that members participate in each year, which help raise thousands of pounds for local and national charities.
