Firefighters had to remove glass from a car door to rescue an 18-month-old child trapped inside.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called at 9.32pm yesterday and a crew from Bridport attended the scene near Seatown.

On arrival, they were met by one of the child’s parents who led them to the car.

The family had arrived after a day out, got out of the car shutting the doors behind them. When they went to open the rear door, it wouldn’t open. They then tried to open all other doors only to find them locked. The car had a keyless entry system and the only key fob they had was still inside the car.

The child was fast asleep and blissfully unaware of the slight drama that had unfolded.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “Crews tried all manner of ideas to try and gain access to the car without causing too much damage. Even with the car alarm now sounding and quite a crowd gathered round, the child was still sound asleep.

“Eventually crews had no option but to remove the driver’s door glass and open the door. With the child now out and cuddling with mum and dad, crews cleaned up the glass and made the door weather proof. It’s believed the battery in the keyless key fob had died and therefore was not transmitting to the vehicle allowing the doors to be opened. Unfortunately, this was the one and only key.”
