Organisers of a popular event are hoping it burns brightly when they host it for the first time.

Candles on the Cobb is returning to Lyme Regis, and will take place from 8pm on Sunday, August 26.

The event, which has been organised this year by the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis for the first time, will see 5000 candles lit on The Cobb to provide one of of the most spectacular sights in the south west summer calendar.

On the night, the tea-light candles are positioned around the harbour, and covered by plastic beakers.

This will be the seventh event, with previous ones held in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2015.

Peter Fortnam, president of Lyme Regis Rotary Club, said: "It is a privilege for the Lyme Regis Rotary club to be able to be instrumental in the continuation of this wonderful event.

"Founded by Phillip Street (our ex-town crier) and Mike Higgs (deputy harbour master) some years ago, it has become a highlight in the West Country calendar raising many thousands for local and national charities.

"It has evolved into a community event involving many local organisations and associations.

"Many thanks to all those volunteers taking part, without whose support it would not happen.

"Our special thanks to members of the previous committee who have joined us to keep this special event going and those that have offered their sponsorship and help including Adrian Wood, Wes Dowell, Alex Heath and the carnival committee, our town crier Alan Vian, and our candle sponsors, the Quinell family."

This year, the event will be held as part of the commemorations to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Proceeds made at the event will be split 50/50 between the Royal British Legion and local youth causes.

Ian Jarvis, The Royal British Legion (RBL) community fundraiser for Dorset, said: "The RBL in Dorset is proud to be associated with and a benefactor of this fantastic localised event.

"Fundraising within Dorset has once again broken all records this year and this is because our volunteers and local organisations go to extraordinary lengths to raise funds for our beneficiaries."
