Have you ever wondered what lies beneath?

South West Water is inviting residents to explore beneath Lyme Regis seafront at as part of England’s largest celebration of culture and heritage - Heritage Open Days.

Next month, visitors will be able to visit Gun Cliff Sewage Pumping Station, and a tour will offer a unique twist on local heritage and visitors can descend beneath the sea wall defences at Cobb Gate and discover how the town’s wastewater travels through an underground network.

Peter Turney, site manager at the Gun Cliff Sewage Pumping Station, said: “Visitors to Gun Cliff will be surprised and fascinated to discover what goes on under their feet as they stroll along the promenade eating their ice creams.

“We aim to be as unobtrusive as possible which is why the station is so well hidden and thanks to our hi-tech equipment, seaside visitors don’t need to worry about unpleasant odours.

“Without this pumping station sewage would still be going out to sea meaning it plays a massive role in our local area.”

Visitors will receive a tour of the facility, pipes and storm chamber which plays a key role in keeping the bathing waters at Lyme Regis clean.

Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, bringing together more than 2,500 organisations, 5,000 events and 40,000 volunteers. Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history.
