A former hotelier, whose name was synonymous with dedicated work for good causes throughout West Dorset, has died.

Tony Perram, who was aged 81, moved to Lyme Regis in 1985 when, with his wife Margaret, went into the holiday trade as owner of St Michael’s Hotel.

The couple, prominent in the local hotels and restaurants association for several years, ran the business very successfully until 1999 when they retired for a short time to Uplyme before moving to Lyme at Fairfield Park.

Born in Paignton, Tony met Margaret in Sidmouth soon after completing his national service in the Army, and the couple spent 55 years together.

Tony, a qualified mechanic who worked for the AA for many years, quickly made his mark in Sidmouth where he was a charter member of the Lions, serving as its fourth president from 1979 until 1981.

He joined the Sidmouth Perseverance Lodge of Freemasons in 1982, impressing with his commitment and progressing to the office of master.

He was very active for many charitable causes, in particular the Sidmouth Hot Cross Bun Committee for which he was in office at the time of his death after more than 40 years as secretary raising funds to give children their annual Easter treat.

Tony had a 'speedy rise in esteem' when he transferred to the Lyme Regis Montagu Lodge of Freemasons, having served for only a couple of years before being elevated to the office of master.

A talented organist, he was much in demand to play at Freemason functions all over the district.

He remained tireless in his outstanding efforts for the lodge right up until the end, carrying out a host of necessary duties to ensure the high reputation and efficient operation of the group.

As well as a widow, he leaves three children, Simon, Ashley, and Nina, and three grandchildren, Alex, Declan and Mollie.
