JURASSIC: The extraordinary interest in Stephen Spielberg's film Jurassic Park has been good news for at least one West Dorset business.

At Dinosaurland at Lyme Regis, visitor numbers are 80 per cent up and sales of film spin-offs are soaring.

Dinosaurland partner Cindy Langham said: "The effect has been amazing."

SPLASH DOWN: New Bridport Leisure Centre manager Stephen Hughes is looking forward to the opening of the indoor swimming pool, currently under construction.

Stephen (30), who succeeds John Matthews as manager of the Bridport and West Dorset Sports Trust owned complex, says it will prove invaluable to the eduction of local primary school children.

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS: Over 30 flower arrangers are making preparations for a summer festival at St Mary's Church, Beaminster, in aid of the fabric fund.

Members of the Bridport flower club and arrangers from the church will join forces to produce a splash of colour on the theme of Benedicite, a canticle in praise of creation.

50 YEARS AGO:

July, 19 1968

ROYAL MEETING: When the Mayor and Mayoress of Bridport (Alderman and Mrs Harold Smith) went to the Buckingham Palace Garden Party on Thursday of last week, they met the Mayors and Mayoresses of Poole, Wareham and Weymouth among the 5000 guests on the spacious lawns.

RE-ENACTMENT: Fifty years of Bridport's Girlguiding history was relived in a colourful pageant in the grounds of the Colfox School, Bridport, on Saturday afternoon.

The families and friends of the Players, among whom were many old Guides, saw the re-enactment of some of the most important events.

CHARITY: As a result of the Christian Aid Week collection organised by the Bridport Council of Churches in May, in the borough and surrounding villages, £330 has been sent to Christian Aid headquarters.

Of this, £50 was raised by the hunger lunch held in the Congregational Church schoolroom and the remainder came from house-to-house and church collections.
