What does it take to have the Bridport sound? Well, in a matter of days you'll find out.

Musicians will take to the stage at Bridport Sounds on Saturday, showcasing the best live talent the area has to offer.

Organised by music charity B Sharp, it is the event's first year.

Inspiring, up-and-coming and original musicians, bands and singer-songwriters were invited to enter a competition to win the chance to perform at the event.

The Collaborators, a popular local Bridport band, won first prize of £200 and a headline slot. Second prize went to Pizza for Dogs, an emerging young band, and third prize went to Bridport Jams; both bands will play support slots on the night.

Musician Ellie Walker, music leader for B Sharp, is co-ordinating Bridport Sounds along with Hannah Cumming.

“I was very impressed with the level of entrants to our competition," said Ellie. "It's great to see what musical talents there are in the Bridport area. The prize winners have such a fun and lively sound that we thought they would be perfect for the gig. I’m excited to not only organise this but also to go to it, it’s going to be a really fun night."

B Sharp, which aims to 'build a sound future for young people through music,' aims to offer a broad, inclusive programme of music, singing, participation, creation, performance and development to people from their early years to adulthood.

Ellie said: “We’re excited to be launching this new venture. Bridport Sounds will not just give local talent a chance to play in a great gig in July, but will enable bands, singer-songwriters and musicians to take part in a brand new event sharing music making in new and exciting way in the region, and inspiring the next generation of musicians.”

The gig, and the work leading up to it, is supported through ‘I Will’, a programme funded by Dorset Community Foundation which, in this instance, enables young promoters and volunteers to gain experience in event production, training, utilising their own ideas and concepts and enabling them to gain work experience.

Hannah added: “One of our core aims at B Sharp is to support young people to try things out in all areas that interest them around music, so it’s great for us to work on a project that will enable young people to do this – they will have opportunities to shape the gig we are putting on, and put on their own events in the future. What a great opportunity that is for young people to gain valuable work experience and life skills.

Bridport Sounds will take place at Bridport Arts Centre at 7.30pm on Saturday.
