A hob fire was started after a gas dial failed.

Fire crews were called to a fire at a property in Bradpole just after 7.20pm yesterday.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service was called to the incident by the residents of the property in Dodhams Farm Close.

Two crews from Bridport attended the scene and, on arrival, found the hob, including the dials, alight.

A spokesman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said: "When the gas was turned on, the dial failed and subsequently couldn't be turned off.

"Gas started to escape, not only through the burner, but also through the dials themselves.

"At this stage, the gas ignited.

"The property owners did the correct thing and immediately left the property and called the fire service."

After extinguishing the fire, the crews isolated the gas on the outside of the property.

Due to the fault and damaged caused by the fire, the residents were advised to not turn the gas on and to get an engineer and electrician in to carry out any repairs.

The spokesman added: "Although a bit shaken, the property owners didn't come to any harm.

"And just like they did, it's important to remain calm, get out and get assistance as soon as possible."

The fire service is now reminding people to check their smoke alarms, ensure escape routes from the property are planned and that basic fire fighting equipment, such as a fire blanket and fire extinguisher, are kept in your home.

The service has issued the following advice:

  • Not to extinguish a fire if there is a risk to your safety
  • Don't panic
  • Tell everyone in the property
  • Smoke rises so stay low in the cleaner air
  • Check doors and handles with the back of your hand, if warm, don't open it
  • If possible, close doors behind you on your way out
  • Don't go back into the property
  • Call the fire service
  • If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop and roll
