A popular annual vintage rally steamed into West Bay once more.

The 42nd annual West Dorset Vintage Rally, which has raised more than £80,000 since it started, attracted around two thousand people to the Melplash Showground over two days.

Visitors enjoyed the sight of vintage tractors, stationary engines, as well as enjoy the entertainment that was on offer.

Despite it not being the sunniest weekend, the fact the weather remained dry helped to contribute towards the success of the event, which was organised by the West Dorset Vintage Tractor and Stationary Club Ltd (WDVTSEC).

Wendy Beaven, treasurer and company secretary for WDVTSEC, said: "It was our 42nd annual rally, a nostalgia weekend for steam, tractor, stationary engines, cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and even a tank.

"We also had a craft tent, model makers and outside collections.

"I would like to say thank you to every one for making it happen.

"We have a very good rally co-ordinator, Mr Dave Dear, who makes sure things run smoothly."

Those that attended were treated to music from the four-part harmony group The Decadettes, as well as ring displays by the dog agility team, countryside demonstrations, working exhibitions and more.

Paul Coggins, who attended the event, said: "I arrived on-site to see a well-organised and presented show. "the sun was shining and the crowds started to appear on the Sunday morning. "The vintage tractor display in the main ring was very nostalgic and was watched by many, with every type of tractor on show. "The other fantastic display was the steam driven saw bench, this brought a real sense of good old fashion skills and hard work to the show. A most enjoyable day."

A vintage auction also took place on the Saturday, with a private auctioneer taking bids from those present.

The final figure raised from the rally and auction will not be announced until later this year, when the WDVTSEC will be hosting a harvest supper and give the surplus monies away.

On the raffle alone, which was under new hands for this year, £500 was raised, which will go into the pot for distribution later this year.

The local organisations that helped at the rally will be amongst those who will benefit, with the local sea cadets and scout groups set to get a share of the profits.

The club currently has 350 members and meets once a month to socialise, share experiences and arrange club activities.

Meetings are held at the Colliton Club at Colliton Park, Dorchester on the second Friday of each month at 8pm, although meetings are not held in July, August and December.
