Visitors to a museum's new exhibition received a unique glimpse behind the scenes.

On Friday, June 22, guests were invited to a special preview of 'Bridport Undressed', an exhibition of textiles from Bridport Museum's collection in the Allsop Gallery at the Bridport Arts Centre.

The exhibition, which runs until Wednesday, July 18, showcases how the museum cares for the 50,000 objects it has in its stores.

Curated by volunteers, the exhibition focuses on the museum's fascinating textile collection, which includes a painted silk dress, Dorset smocks, pantomime dame costumes and frilly Bloomers.

The exhibition aims to highlight the challenges faced in preserving the items for future generations to enjoy.

The challenges including finding enough space for each item, preventing the items from being eaten by pests, and maintaining each piece in the right condition so it is conserved for the longer-term.

Museum director, Emily Hicks, said: "We are really pleased to be collaborating with Bridport Arts Centre for this exhibition.

"We think everyone will enjoy getting up close and personal with our costume collection.

"There is something for everyone, Bloomers to blouses, smocks to suits, you might even get a chance to dress up and take the obligatory selfie."

Entry to the exhibition is free, with donations welcome to support the work of both organisations.

Curtis Flucher, the new director of Bridport Arts Centre, said: "It is great for the arts centre to get to work with the museum on this unique, colourful and brilliant exhibition.

"Staff and volunteers have worked hard to create a really informative look into some of the museum's collection that is normally stored away and can't be seen.

"As the new director, I look forward to working with the museum more in the future."

The museum organises a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, family activities, fundraising events, talks for local groups and other outreach events.
