OPENING: Charmouth's new primary school was officially opened on Wednesday- 32 years after the replacement building was promised.

And, before unveiling a commemorative plaque, the Lord Lieutenant, Lord Digby, congratulated the governors on their persistence in pushing for new premises.

"Your old school was built over 120 years ago," he said, "and that is long past its sell-by date."

KNOCK-OUT: Handicapped youngsters from all over the south of England and their adult companions enjoy a slap-up tea and entertainment at Burton Bradstock's Freshwater Caravan Park.

The fun was provided by members of the park's activities committee, headed by chairman Keith Galpin and publicity officer Mike Beese, who handed out gifts of chocolate eggs donated by Terry's of York.

BRIGHT: Youngsters at Beaminster School reached the county finals of the National Fire Safety youth quiz.

The safety-conscious pupils came fourth in the annual competition, which attracted 47 teams from schools and youth organisations across Dorset.

50 YEARS AGO:

June, 21 1968

WELCOME HOME: What a year 1968 is proving to be for Bridport's Alderman Harold Smith.

Last month he was installed as the town's Mayor for the second time in six years.

Two days after becoming the First Citizen he attended the wedding of his elder daughter Jennifer in St. Mary's Parish Church.

And now, after an absence of 20 years abroad, his sister, Mrs Nalsa Emeteron, has returned to Bridport.

It was in 1948 that Mrs Emerton, then Miss Smith, left Bridport for a teaching job at Fairbridge Memorial College in Rhodesia.

STORMY: Netherbury fete organisers found themselves in a dilemma on Saturday morning.

After Friday night's downpour they had to decide whether to proceed with the fete in the playing fields as advertised, or switch the venue to the village hall.

They chose to hold the event indoors and their decision meant that several attractions had to be cancelled.

YOUTH: Bridport is to have a permanent youth centre.

Dorchester County Council recently purchased the T.A. Hall in Gundry Lane from the Ministry of Defence and plans are now in hand to convert it into a suitable place for the young people.
