Part of a West Bay car park will temporarily reopen this weekend to make suitable provision for parking to accomodate a major event.

The Power Boat Racing event takes place this weekend at West Bay and West Dorset Dorstrict Council has worked with the resurfacing works contractors to make sure there are enough parking spaces available.

The northern end of Station Yard car park will be open whilst the contractor finishes works in the main entrance. Signs will be in place directing cars in to the area.

There is no demarcation yet, but there is space for approximately a further 60 cars. This area will then close again after the event in order for works to be fully completed by the end of June.

Cllr John Russell said: “This ambitious scheme uses innovative design across all three locations. We have taken the utmost care to not disrupt the unique ambience that is West Bay.

"All the refurbished and new parking areas will have demarcation, whilst individual parking spaces are sized to suit families and the less mobile. Overall capacity will be increased as a result of the new works.

“We made a significant financial investment in to these works and we are certain that the benefits to West Bay will be enjoyed for many years.”

The design of the new surfaces - at the Bridport Arms, Station Yard and West Bay Road car parks - aims to reduce rain water run-off to ditches and streams and should therefore lower the risk of flooding to the surrounding areas.

WDDC still anticipates that the works will be completed by the end of June, after which all three car parks will be back open to the public.
