WINNERS: Loders residents have won their village a top award in the Dorset Village Ventures competition.

The Loders Village Appraisal- compiled with the participation of more than 95 per cent of the parish population- scooped first prize in the archives and information category of the contest.

DIVERSITY: A good town council should function like parts of a health body- each component performing its own role to the best of its ability.

That was the essence of the sermon given by the mayor's chaplain Roger Shambrook at St. Swithin's Church, Allington, as part of events surrounding Sunday's mayor's parade.

Mr Shambrook said: "If all were good at administration, but not actually doing anything where would we be?"

CLOWNING AROUND: Twenty-five West Dorset children with special needs and their helpers enjoyed a fun-packed day out at Cricket St Thomas Wildlife Park.

They were accompanied by a merry band of Brit Valley Rotary Club members dressed as clowns.

LAUNCH: Bridport Inner Wheel Club held its charter presentation lunch at the Greyhound Hotel last week.

This great day had been eagerly awaited and the sun shone for the 24 founder-members and their 100 guests who included the husbands of the founder-members.

The room had been beautifully decorated by Mrs E Andrews and other founder-members and made a perfect setting for the occasion.

TAKEN: "Bring back our cannon balls" pleads Mr Elliot Andrews, Bridport's Town Clerk.

Last week it was reported that apparently two contract divers working on the long sea out-fall sewerage scheme had come-up with two cannon balls found on the sea bed.

The divers have since left and it is believed that they took the cannon balls to the Maritime Museum at Greenwich.

VISITING: Nineteen foreign students, many of whom will return to their schools to instruct others how to teach English, visited Beaminster School last week.
