Aspiring young musicians took to the stage to showcase their talents - and it was all for a good cause.

Bridport's MusicAthon, which took place at the weekend, saw hundreds of musicians, singers and choirs perform for the community.

A huge event in the town's calendar, MusicAthon was arguably bigger and better than ever as it marked a special milestone; its 10th anniversary.

Performances came from Silver Chix East Street Band, Pizza 4 Dogs, Ray Stamford, Rock Island Skiffle Group and the Bucky Maybes Ukelele Group, to name a few, and once again, the event raised vital funds for the Richard Ely Trust for Young Musicians and the Bridport Youth and Community Trust.

David Powell, of the Minerva Learning Trust, said: "The event was really good and we were so impressed by the team who organised it - especially as they are all volunteers. We were very impressed and happy to bring a group of children and young people from the Minerva Learning Trust to take part - they absolutely loved performing in Bridport. Of course, it's all about raising money for a charity that supports children who are trying to learn to play music. It was a very good day.

Performances took place at both the United Church on East Street and Bucky Doo Square and the whole community was welcomed as part of the audience to cheer on performers.

Bridport Lions ran a coffee morning at the United Church, with all profits going to the main event.

Pat Crawford and her team offered light lunches and other refreshments alongside a bric-a-brac stall in Bucky Doo, which was co-ordinated by Roz Copson.

The Richard Ely Trust for Young Musicians was established in 2001 and, since then, has supported more than 200 young people and allowed them to follow a wide variety of musical interests and activities.

It is run entirely by volunteers and must constantly fundraise to continue its work.

The trust's Paul Kent said: "The MusicAthon is always very good for the trust and it's excellent we have this support. We help about 70 children every year get into music or help develop their musical skills and some go on to be well-accomplished musicians. It's a very good cause.

"The MusicAthon makes a great contribution, and Bridport itself is one of our more generous areas in which we have good support - we are very grateful."
