A memorial walk in honour of a much-loved mum has been hailed a success by her family who say she will 'live on in our hearts and minds.'

More than 250 people turned out in glorious weather for the second Rebecca Harris Memorial Walk on Sunday, enjoying perfect hiking weather as they raised vital funds in her memory.

The walk, in honour of Bridport mum Rebecca Harris who died in 2014, raised money for the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust and to support local Bridport schools with arts and outdoor learning. About 145 people started the walk at Charmouth, tackling the steep path up and over Golden Cap before dropping down to the lunchtime point at Seatown. A further 95 walkers then joined for the second stage of the walk across country to Symondsbury. The walkers, wearing Bec's favourite colour, purple, in her memory, spanned the generations and included energetic children who ran all the way, including Rebecca's own sons.

The end point was celebrated in the grounds of Symondsbury School with music, refreshments, a raffle and an auction. Organiser Victoria Upton said: "The atmosphere at the event was absolutely fantastic. Everyone who came brought with them some warmth and love to spread around. Thank you."

Rebecca's father, Robert Harris, said: "This has been a brilliant day and I'd like to thank everyone who has walked, raised money, bought raffle tickets or made a donation. We are overwhelmed at the support you've given us. Most importantly, you've ensured that Bec lives on in our hearts and minds. Thank you".

A wide range of businesses supported the event, including Kitson and Trotman, Dorshi, The Anchor Inn, River Cottage, Symondsbury Estate, Balsons and Morrisons.

During the end celebrations, Robert and his wife, Julie, cut the ribbon on Symondsbury School's new garden area which benefited from funding from the first memorial walk held in 2015.

The garden, designed and built by the pupils in the school's very popular gardening club, includes a sensory area, a wide range of wildlife habitats and a hammock.

Sponsorship money is still being received but early indications show the walk will have raised more than £5,000.
