There was lots of local rivalry and competition at a rally for young farmers.

The 71st Dorset Young Farmers Club County Rally took place at Cokers Frome Farm at the end of April, where representatives from each club competed for prizes.

Representatives from the Beaminster, Blandford, Gillingham & Shaftesbury, Hermitage and Hilfield, Marshwood Vale, Puddletown, Sherborne, Sturminster Newton, and Wareham and Purbeck all competed in the rally, which saw the Sherborne Young Farmers Club win the Rally Shield for most points awarded.

Competitions varied from tractor driving to welly toss, agriculture, theory and general competitions, cookery competitions and craft competitions.

Winners of some of the competitions will go onto further heats, with the winners of the tug-of-war going on to compete at a regional competition, and the winners of the floral competition going on to compete at a national competition.

Marshwood Vale Young Farmers Club saw the most individual wins, which saw the club finish in second with 386 points to Sherborne YFC's 440 points.

Beaminster Young Farmers Club finished in fourth with 190 points, and Hermitage & Hillfield finished sixth with 36 points.

Mike Miller, county chairman for Dorset Young Farmers Club, said: "We are grateful to the Mayo Family of Cokers Frome Farm Showground for hosting us and allowing the federation to use their farm all day for the competitions and long into the night for the party.

"A big thank you to all of our sponsors, judges and stewards for all of their support during the day.

"Thank you to the various companies who supplied equipment, machinery and time for rally competitions.

"Once again a big thank you to our sponsor for this event Cornish Mutual."

Two members from each club also took part in the Julia's House Extra Mile, or the "Nine Club Run" as it was called on the day.

The members gained sponsorship before doing the run, with a trophy being presented to the club that raised the most.

The money raised will be added to the £150 a Julia's House stall made on the day.

Laura Kelly, community fundraising manager at Julia's House, said: "We are extremely grateful to all groups that have been involved with doing the Dorset Young Farmers Extra Mile for Julia's House.

"The Extra Mile is out first initiative where groups or schools can encourage young people to get active and all funds raised are split 50/50 between their group and Julia's House Children's Hospice.

"It was a great day, with lots of laughter and young people running, walking or skipping for a good cause.

"Event like this are crucial to Julia's House as we are almost entirely community funded.

"We could not support our families without the generosity of local people, thank you again to Dorset Young Farmers."
