BEAMINSTER: Police are urging residents to be aware after a suspicious incident in which a man claimed to be checking drains.

A resident received a call from someone claiming to work for Nationwide Drain and Sewage, who said his company were slowly checking drains in the road and stated he may need to get access to the house to check the drains and would use a camera down the drain to check the pipes.

A police spokesman said: "The resident advised they may not be in but the man said that he required them to be in. The resident received a call a day later asking if they would be available, when told they would be at home the man arrived in less than five minutes in a black van accompanied by another man who sat in the van.  The resident asked to see some credentials and the man went out to his van and came back with a form and asked for a signature. The form indicated that it was free to check the drains, and the form looked legitimate so the resident signed it.  The man stated that when he had completed the job he would knock on the door.

"The resident was very surprised that within a few minutes the van had left and a short while later received a call from the man who said the survey was done and she had nothing to worry about.

"The resident reported that a neighbour was watching both men closely and believes that they fled because of this."

Dorset Police advice to residents is to be vigilant when receiving phone calls or doorstep callers advising of works to drains or roads in the area and never allow anyone inside their home unless they are absolutely certain that the people are completely legitimate.  Normally, any drain or sewage works to a property would be accompanied by a letter ahead of the works from the company advising who has instructed them, what work needs to be carried out and also provide a date or indication of when the work would be completed.
