JOBS: Bridport's Par Industries - where 19 people were made redundant on Monday after the receivers were called in - could be under new ownership by the start of next week. Joint administrative receiver Richard Hill, of Bristol-based K.P.M.G. Peat Marwick, said that negotiations were continuing with a potential buyer in a bid to save the Par group, who employ about 100 workers at St Andrew's Industrial Estate, Bridport.

PROTEST: A protest at a school escalated when many students attended. A walk-out of about 100 pupils took place at the Colfox School against the school's decision to temporarily lock toilets during lessons because of vandalism. Pupils can use them at break times or, if they are desperate, ask for a key.

RESERVE: West Dorset Council's plans to establish a nature reserve on land at Wanderwell Quarry, Bridport, were set to go a stage further. Members of the Development and Planning Committee were being recommended by Planning Policy and Conservation Manager Derek Boyt to take steps to secure the purchase of a further six-and-a-half acres, to add to the three acres the council already own at the old quarry.

ANNIVERSARY: A couple who were born within one-and-a-half miles of each other and who have lived in the same house for 50 years celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

They are Mr. and Mrs. Henry James Guppy, of 3, Fishweir Terrace, Bradpole. Mr Guppy married Miss Ethel Florence Hembury in Bradpole Parish Church while he was on short leave from the Royal Engineers. He was able to spend only a few days with his bride in their new home before moving to an army camp in Scotland.

BEST IN SHOW: For several dog owners in West Dorset all roads will lead to Crufts tomorrow. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hayball, of Easter Piece, Broad Lane, Bridport, are sending their four homebred bulldog bitches to the greatest dog show in the world. Mrs. J.C.F. Gundry, of the Hyde, Walditch, will be sending three miniature silver poodles aged between 18 months and two years. Miss V.H. Watkins, of Milton Mill, West Milton, will be showing off one of her salukis.
