A teenager has been charged with drink driving after a crash on the coast road in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The driver, aged 18, was unhurt in the crash although extensive damage was caused to the car, which flipped over.

A police officer discovered the crash scene along Burton Road at 5.20am on Monday.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said an officer came across the crash and that no other vehicles were involved.

The spokesman added: “This was a single vehicle collision involving a black Renault Clio registered to a man from Bridport. There were no injuries and an 18-year-old man from Bridport has been charged with driving when alcohol level is above the legal limit.”

The arrest comes during a Christmas crackdown on drink and drug driving by Dorset Police.

The campaign ran from December 1, 2017, through to January 1, 2018, with a total of 53 people being charged with offences during it.

Three of those are from west Dorset and are due to appear in court in January, February and March.

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, Martyn Underhill, said: “Though the figures are encouraging, too many people are still making the selfish choice to drive whilst over the legal limit. This has the potential to devastate families. I thank Dorset Police officers for their enforcement efforts, which improve road safety by taking dangerous individuals off the road.”
