A stretch of the Jurassic Coast has been given a makeover.

Evan’s Cliff, the area east of the bridge at Charmouth, has a new look thanks to the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team and the Jurassic Coast Trust.

The area has been given an uncluttered new look, with a simple seating structure and new information panel.

The smart, new circular area has a low-key and natural feel in keeping with the surrounding environment while complementing the bridge.

The area has been opened up to help people appreciate the stunning coastal environment while keeping future maintenance costs to a minimum.

The number of signs has been reduced, replaced by a simple panel giving people useful information for a visit to the beach, including tide times (and a guide on how to read them), safety information and advice on safe fossil-hunting and dog-walking.

Cllr Daryl Turner, Dorset County Council’s cabinet member for natural and built environment, said: “This project was possible thanks to a successful partnership approach between the county council, Charmouth Parish Council, the Foreshore Committee, the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, the Jurassic Coast Trust and Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

“We are really pleased with the results, which will help our visitors and local people enjoy this section of our stunning Jurassic Coast all the more.”

Paul Oatway, chairman of the Charmouth Foreshore Committee, added: “Charmouth Parish Council and the Foreshore Committee are delighted to have been partners in this project, which seeks to enhance and improve our natural environment for visitors and local people. We feel the simple changes have made the area much more attractive and the messages which we want people to take note of, such as the tide times and dog fouling, are now presented in clearer, easier to read format.”

The work was led by Dorset AONB team and the Jurassic Coast Trust, working in partnership to improve access and interpretation along the Jurassic Coast.
