A HOST of businesses based at a trading estate which is subject to controversial development plans have pledged their support in the "step forward" for the future.

Earlier this month, Hayward and Co won planning permission to demolish part of St Michael's Trading Estate to make way for 91 new homes and refurbish the estate. Last week, The News reported that campaign group Enterprise St Michael's has called a meeting for its next steps in opposing the plans.

But 21 businesses which operate at Bridport's South West Quadrant have called for cooperation with Haywards and to "forge forward in a positive way".

In a letter signed by the firms, it reads: "This process has rumbled on for nearly 30 years and has been an expensive venture for them so far. It has also been a difficult situation for businesses as there are constant questions about potential closure. However, in light of this outline planning permission, a number of tenants wish to work with Hayward and Co to forge forward with this development in a positive way.

"We finally have some future direction, albeit with building works for a good while to come but without renovation some of our accommodation could soon be condemned."

The letter continues: "The sewerage system serving our buildings will need hundreds of thousands of pounds. Road surfacing and the updating of power, water and internet will almost certainly be even more. Restoration of walls, roofing and windows is a very expensive labour of love but the full improvement of St Michael’s will also bring benefits such as additional income to the town from those employed in such a long-term building project.

"Now is the time for Bridport Town Council and other objectors to look on this as a step forward and join in a constructive discussion with Hayward & Co about the proposed vision for the area.

"Whilst there are concerns over a number of proposals for the area, we should acknowledge that the owners of the site have put forward reasonable proposals. The unique and distinctive mix of small industrial and retail units will continue along with much needed, truly affordable housing as part of the development.

"As a group of tenants, we realise change is necessary and appreciate Hayward’s supportive nature as landlords. We trust our good relationship will continue as we look toward the future development and regeneration of St Michael’s Trading Estate and better communication between all. During this development the business community here looks forward to the continued support and use by residents and visitors to the area."
