VILLAGERS and visitors had a “smashing time” when a traditional street fair tallied up funding for local causes.

The Stoke Abbot Street Fair took place on Saturday – with money raised for St Mary’s Church, Stoke Abbott village hall and Beaminster Phoenix Youth Club.

The event kicked off with the traditional Stoke Abbott Sick Club parade led by piper James Munro, before stalls opened for visitors to enjoy.

Chris Coles, coordinator of Stoke Abbott Street Fair, said: ""In perfect weather, Stoke Abbott’s street fair got off to a rousing start with the traditional Sick Club Parade through the streets, led by a piper.

“The many stalls lining our village were a hive of activity, with Morris dancing and musical entertainment throughout the afternoon for lots of happy visitors. In addition to the usual stalls and cream teas, families enjoyed a smashing time, literally, with the new china-smashing attraction, and the return of the ever-popular fun dog show, while the impossibly cute Alpacas attracted many fans.

“After so much hard work, it’s always a thrill to see locals and holidaymakers of all ages enjoying our unique event and, above all, for the entire village community to unite in putting on a fantastic afternoon to raise funds for St Mary’s Church, the village hall and, this year, Beaminster's Phoenix Youth Club. Thank you to everyone who came and the many in the village who made it happen.”

Youngsters donned pirate and mermaid fancy dress before taking part in the fancy dress parade. Revellers also took part in the well dressing ceremony, a tradition dating back to the 14th century- while the family dog show returned, with prizes handed out.

Entertainment was provided by the Mill Street Jazz Band, the Wyld Morris dancers and Mitch Norman.
