PIRATES took over West Bay as an annual charity fundraiser drew crowd on bank holiday Monday.

The West Bay Pirates Day event, organised by the West Bay Days group, included swashbuckling-themed games including splat the rat, walk the plank and hook a duck - while there were almost 1,000 prizes up for grabs from a raffle.

Sylvia Stafford, organiser from West Bay Days, was pleased with the "community spirit" created by the event.

She said: "There was a huge invasion of pirates from far and wide, making this the most successful pirates day to date.

"It was a great family event with a wonderful atmosphere and sense of community spirit, and we were delighted to see so many visitors and especially children, stall holders, staff from local businesses and volunteers dressed in pirate costume."

She added: "The children showed their skills at a range of pirate games and managed to win the majority of the near 1,000 prizes on offer. The crowds were very appreciative of the two performances by the Bridport Street Crew, as well as the delicious cake and teas in the West Bay Cafe. With stalls on Harbour Green, this popular community event continues to grow."

West Bay Days will donate funding raised at the event to a range of local groups and organisations.

Mrs Stafford added: "West Bay Days would like to thank their 2017 beneficiaries, Bridport Barracudas, Pathways to Care, St Andrew’s Pre-School and West Bay Women’s Institute for providing a great crew of volunteers, the many generous sponsors and regular volunteers.

"We would particularly like to thank the local community and visitors for their help and support."

The group's big summer celebration and charity fundraiser, West Bay Day, will this year be held on Sunday, August 6 - with details to be announced closer to the event.
