PUPILS at Powerstock School have been using their outdoor ‘classroom’ to enhance their curriculum work in maths and literacy.

Head teacher Louise Greenham said: “We used our beautiful grounds when we spent the whole day teaching and learning outside.

“The children used their knowledge of angles and found the angles in the environment, estimating and measuring where possible.

“The Year 3s and 4s also put their knowledge of prepositions into practice in describing where everything was in relation to other objects. Prepositions were then chalked onto the playground for the children in other classes to spot them to aid their learning too.

“Research does show that especially in children’s ‘using and applying’, outdoor learning really helps them towards a deeper understanding of maths, literacy and of course topic related subjects.

“We know this works and whenever possible, we do try to take our learning outside. The younger children in Burton Class learn outside, weather permitting and enjoy their own garden, as well as the school grounds, where reception children learn through play most days. We are so lucky in Powerstock to have fantastic grounds to play in, surrounded by glorious countryside. The children learn quickly to respect their environment.”and enjoy the quiet garden, Powerstock steps and of course the ready made classroom under our magnificent horse chestnut tree.”
