THERE won;t be fish for supper in Owen Lovell's house this week.

The long-held tradition of presenting Lyme Regis' mayor with the first mackerel of the season was discarded this year by the lad who landed the catch.

Harry May skipper of the mackerel fishing boat Marie F said: "For more years than I care to remember the first mackerel of the season caught on a hand line has been presented to the Mayor."

But Gary Colloff of Bridgewater was so proud or his catch -and so fond of eating mackerel - he wasn't keen to let it go.

As he got on Marie F. at the Cobb in Lyme Regis he asked Mr May if the first mackerel had been caught yet as he just missed out last year , Harry assured him it was still up for grabs.

A thrilled Gary said: "I absolutely love mackerel so I'm afraid the Mayor won't be eating this fine specimen but I will share little bits with my two sisters."

Last year, Jonathan Owen caught the first mackerel and also decided to eat it himself, instead of presenting it to the the Mayor."
