IF YOU’VE ever looked up at the stars and wondered what Dorset might look like from space then you are in luck.

Singing Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield posted a picture of the south of England from the International Space Station (ISS) on Twitter recently.

The stunning image was taken from the east facing west and shows the River Severn flowing in to the sea.

Quite clearly visible on the picture though is the Dorset coastline, with Portland especially prominent sticking out on its own off the south coast.

Commander Hadfield shot to fame when he was commander of the International Space Station in 2012 and 2013.

He regularly posted on social media about his experiences in space, including pictures of the earth from the station.

However, this isn’t the first time that Dorset has featured in the a photo posted by Commander Hadfield.

In May 2013 he tweeted a picture of Portland and the South Dorset area from the space station.

He singled out the isle as a place he would like to visit.

On Twitter at the time, he said: “This Isle of Portland looks like an interesting place - the type I’d like to visit now I’m back on Earth.”

The shine Commander Hadfield took to Portland isn’t the isle’s only connection with space in recent years.

Astronaut Dr Michael Foale CBE visited IPACA last year to meet pupils and helped unveil a plaque at a science, technology, engineering and maths lab at Maritime House that was named after him.

Dr Foale embarked on a six space shuttle missions as well as missions to the ISS and was the first Brit to perform a spacewalk.

Commander Hadfield was the first Canadian to command the ISS and also the first to walk in space.

To mark his time in space, he recorded a version of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, with sections in zero gravity, the video has more than 34 million views on Youtube.

He tweeted around 1,500 times from orbit and captured some stunning images of numerous islands, countries, towns and cities from around the world as well as photos of some breathtaking space landscapes.
