A MAN has been arrested after a female steward was allegedly assaulted during an annual carnival celebration.

The Bridport carnival procession, which was due to start at 7pm on Saturday, was held up for around an hour after an alleged incident in West Street.

Road closures had been put in place for the event, with West Allington shut from 4pm–8pm and West Street closed from 6.30pm.

But police were called to reports of a ‘slight injury road traffic collision’ in West Street, shortly before the procession was due to start.

They arrested a 32-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of two counts of assault and one count of possession of a controlled drug.

Eyewitnesses claimed that a female steward was an alleged victim of an assault and yesterday police confirmed they were investigating reports that a woman member of ‘event security’ had sustained injuries.

The spokesman said: “The alleged incident was to do with the marshall stopping traffic and inquiries are continuing.’

In a statement today, organisers of the carnival said: “Thank you so much to the people of Bridport for turning out to to watch another great carnival, our apologies for the delayed start owing to an incident which is now being dealt with by the police. Hope to see you all tonight at the torchlight procession.”

Despite the alleged incident, hundreds of people turned out to enjoy themselves.

One said: “Despite the delay and the weather, it was a fantastic event with a great atmosphere. We’re looking forward to the torchlight procession tonight [Sunday].”

Others took to social media to share their thanks.

Sherry Porter said: “A great carnival with a great carnival feel.....Bridport at its best! Roll on 2017!!”

Witnesses and anyone with information about the alleged West Street incident should call police on 101 quoting 2074.
