IF you want to make a splash this summer you could do worse than sign up with the first ever charity fundraising Lyme Splash.

If you do you'll be committing yourself to swimming 3.15 k fromLyme to Charmouth.

There has been a great response already for open sea swim on Sunday September 11 with both swimmers and volunteers signing up.

Anyone wishing to swim needs to sign up now as places are going fast. Swimmers have to be competent in the sea and have swum at least a mile in open water.

Rest assured it's as safe as it can be - Lyme harbourmaster Graham Forshaw has checked over the safety details and will be attending the safety briefing prior to the event for all those taking part in ensuring the swimmers safety in the water.

The swim will be partially buoyed between Lyme Regis and Charmouth with canoes and boats providing support in the water. The coastguard and the RNLI also have the event logged in their diaries.

Karen Durham-Diggins, event chairman said: "We’ve had a fantastic response from high calibre volunteers for on the water that includes support kayakers, Life Guards as well as safety boats from Lyme Regis Power Boat Club and Lyme Regis Sailing Club. We want swimmers to enjoy this event and to support that safety is paramount, so we are checking and double checking every detail."

Volunteers on the beaches have also been coming forward. At Charmouth physiotherapist Rebecca Loader and Devon based The Soft Tissue Studio’s sports masseur Emma Prior will be on hand if anyone gets cramp together with first aiders to help if anyone gets cold or has any minor problem.

“Everyone is really pulling together for this event, but we can always take on more volunteers – I’ve a few more jobs to fill,” added Karen.

At the end of their swim Dorset Tea is providing all the swimmers, and volunteers, with a hot cup of tea together with Moores biscuits to help warm them up and re-energise them.

Lyme Splash will be providing space blankets for swimmers after the Challenge so they can wrap themselves up on their Lyme Rib Ride back to Lyme Regis. On their return they can have a hot shower and change courtesy of the Lyme Regis Sailing Club.

Swimmers need to register now at lyme-splash.com/swimmers to participate to swim the 3.15k Lyme Regis to Charmouth Challenge.

The cost to register is £25 and each swimmer is being asked if they could donate too for the selected charities; B Sharp, The Marine Theatre and Water Aid.
