A CENTRE for the arts is at risk of closure unless its concert series is well supported.

St Peter’s Church in Eype, which has been a centre for the arts to keep the church open, needs restoration and is holding concerts to raise money for the upkeep of the church.

The six month series has been curated by local music lover Mark Sexton and runs under the name of Bridport LIVE, featuring an eclectic line up of top quality musicians.

September 15 sees Kiki Dee and Carmelo Luggeri on the stage, followed by Sally Barker on October 22 – the singer who made Tom Jones cry on The Voice.

Eype Church was built to cathedral-like proportions in 1865, but, in effect a chapel, it has always been a subsidiary of St. John the Baptist, Symondsbury.

Without frequent visitors and financial support, Eype’s Centre for the Arts risks disuse and disrepair.

Mark Sexton, founder of Bridport LIVE, said: “Bridport LIVE is a new music club born out of a love of live music in an intimate surrounding by highly accomplished musicians/artists.

"We are lucky to have such a unique and charming venue on our doorsteps; everyone who plays there comments on the beauty of the atmosphere – whatever the genre – and for the audience it’s always a special experience.

“With that in mind I strongly believe it’s in everyone’s interests to support the upkeep of Eype Church and ensure musicians, artists and our community can enjoy the space for years to come.”

The Gravity Drive will use their concert in November to launch their new single.
