TRAVELLERS blocked a town centre car park on market day in Bridport.

Caravans moved onto the Rope Walks car park on Tuesday (28) evening - before being asked to move on by police on Wednesday morning.

A resident who did not want to be named, said: "They were causing chaos - no cars could get in and out of the car park."

He added: "They couldn't have picked a worse day for it, being market day. This car park is bad enough at the best of times, so it really won't please a lot of people."

Another resident said: "There were a lot of them, but they weren't causing any problems.

"It was quite funny watching them try to fit into the car park - it was like they were playing a game of Tetris.

"The police told them they had until 1pm to leave and they were gone by 11.30am. There was no mess and they weren't being loud or anything."

A Dorset Police spokeswoman said: "At 9.32pm on Tuesday, Dorset Police received a report of about eight caravans in the car park behind Waitrose in St. Michaels Lane in Bridport.

"A Section 62 notice was served on Wednesday morning and the caravans have left."
