WEYMOUTH welcomed Bournemouth, Horsham Spinners and Horsham Table Tennis Club to play in individual and team challenge events.

The link-up with Horsham came about at a training trip to Sweden in the summer.

The individual event saw Weymouth’s Tom Cherry lose 3-0 to Horsham Spinners’ Charlie Graham-Adams in the final.

Graham-Adams is ranked eighth nationally in the under-13 age group and did not drop a set throughout the competition.

The consistency of his returns against Cherry’s big forehands won the match.

Jamie Blair defeated the Spinners’ Will Michel to finish in third place.

The consolation event saw close semi-finals as Budmouth’s James Green beat Horsham’s Harry Huddlestone and Thomas Hardye’s Hector Knight beat Bournemouth’s Dan Chaplin.

In the final, Green overcame Knight.

The improvers’ competition saw an all-girls final between Budmouth team-mates Rosa McKechnie and Edith Dedman, with the former winning gold.

The second event was a pairs competition.

Again the Horsham Spinners came out on top and this time Graham-Adams was partnered by Michel as they won their three matches against Weymouth, Bournemouth and Horsham TTC.

Weymouth pair Blair and Ethan Gear finished second, Bournemouth’s Ben Kinch and Chaplin were third and the Horsham pairing of Jacob Evans and Harry Yip came fourth.

Horsham Spinners coach Rory Scott said: “It was an enjoyable friendly match to start the season, with a good mix of singles and team play.

“The players performed very well and showed great attitude.

“Hosts Weymouth were very welcoming and laid on a buffet."

Weymouth coach Andy Millar was impressed with the players as his club hosted inter-town matches for the first time.

He said: “This was good practice for Weymouth’s teams in preparation for national competitions due to start later in October.

“It was also useful to introduce younger players to competition against other teams in a friendly environment. We will look to host, and travel to, more events in the future.”

Youth training for girls and boys takes place on Mondays and Saturdays at All Saints School.
