A WEYMOUTH mum has raised hundreds of pounds in recognition of a school for youngsters with special needs.

Gemma Brayshaw organised a charity fundraiser in aid of Wyvern Academy to raise funds for the school, which she hopes her son Dexter, two, will be able to attend next year.

Gemma said she was ‘overwhelmed’ by the support of local people and businesses, who donated raffle prizes and cash to the cause.

The event, held at the Wyke Regis Working Men’s Club, raised £1,400.

Gemma said: “I am delighted to have been involved in raising this considerable sum for Wyvern Academy. I am hoping my son Dexter will secure a place for early next year.

“Dexter has a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder and learning delay. The school do fantastic work through their caring and devoted staff and I will be proud for him to attend.”

She added: “Hopefully I can be involved with Friends of Wyvern charity to help raise more funds in the future. I am overwhelmed by the support of all the companies that donated prizes and hugely grateful to the team at Wyke Working Men’s Club.”

Lynn Peters and the Ladies darts club donated their winnings from a charity darts tournament. The working men’s club, Argos and The Carpet Man donated £50 each for bingo prizes.

Raffle prizes were donated by Weymouth Pavilion, Henri Lloyd, Cath Kidston and Poole Greyhounds.

As well as bingo and a raffle, there was a sale of crafts and baked goods.
