A PROJECT has been launched to rejuvenate an area of Dorset and help youngsters with special needs to learn employment skills.

Employ My Ability has taken on eight students to help run a variety of businesses at Moreton’s Walled Gardens. The youngsters, aged between 18 and 25, will finish their courses with qualifications and work experience to help them seek employment.

Brothers-in-law Harry Schofield and Steve White relaunched the area in June with a cafe, farm shop, events venue and wild camping area.

It’s the first time the walled gardens have been opened to the public in three years.

The former stable block has been converted to classrooms and tutors employed to teach the students. Harry and Steve also work closely with Wyvern Academy in Weymouth, which designed the curriculum.

Steve said: “The whole idea was to try and set up a real business and give young people with special needs the confidence and vocational qualifications they need to get jobs.

"The model is one of the first in the country and is line with the special educational needs reforms from 2014.”

Harry said the aim was to be realistic about aspirations and job opportunities in the area.

“It’s no good training someone in an area in which there is no realistic chance of employment in this area.

We offer courses in horticulture, catering, hospitality, retail, customer service, tourism and skills such as first aid and health and safety.

“We’ve started off small – so only have eight students this year – but we’re looking to grow over the next few years.”

Steve added: “We want to showcase what our students can do. That’s what we’re all about.”

It’s hoped that next summer, glamping will be added to their list of services.

Student Thomas Maloney, 19, said: “I’m enjoying it here so much. It’s a magnificent place to come and work and get some experience for my future after I leave college.”

Thomas previously studied at the Classroom in the Heart of Industry (CHI) programme in Bournemouth. He is studying for qualifications in horticulture and hospitality.
