BRIDPORT 5 YEOVIL 72

BOURNEMOUTH Thirds beat Yeovil 17-12 in the first league game of the season at the start of September.

Bridport then comfortably defeated the same Bournemouth side 46-17 the following week.

You would not then expect Bridport to concede more than 70 points to Yeovil in the third round of league games, and on home turf too.

But that was indeed what happened on Saturday as Bridport were comprehensively outplayed by a physical and very determined Yeovil outfit that came away from the Brewery Field with a 72-5 triumph.

Yeovil’s openside flanker and outside centre had exceptional games and would not have looked out of place playing at a higher level.

Their team-mates also played well, both defensively and in attack, and by half-time had run in eight tries, three of them converted.

Bridport were guilty of numerous missed tackles as they found it hard to live with the intensity of Yeovil’s attacking play.

In contrast, their own attacking moves were quickly snuffed out by the opposition.

On the positive side, the scrum and lineout were solid for Bridport and Yeovil were forced to concede a number of penalties.

From one, Oz Sullivan took a quick tap and go, surged up the field and off-loaded to Liam Poole who was brought down just short of the line.

Scrum-half Ollie Everitt got a good low body position to drive over the line for Bridport’s only score.

Bobby Lester-Card was unable to add the conversion from a wide angle.

Yeovil added four tries in the second half, three of which were converted.

Bridport did see a bit more of the game after the break and the introduction of Dave Cutting at full-back helped to tighten their defence.

However, the hosts were certainly no match for a very good Yeovil side.

The Blues are sixth in the Dorset & Wilts Two South standings after the first three matches of the campaign.

They have this weekend off before entertaining Poole on October 10 – Poole were hammered 94-15 by Bournemouth on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in Dorset & Wilts Four, Bridport Seconds conceded their match away to Blandford Seconds.

Their next outing is scheduled for October 24 when East Dorset Seconds are their opponents.
