A SAFETY warning has been issued to stay away from cliff edges after a group of teenagers were removed from the cliffs at Burton Bradstock.

A member of the public called 999 on Friday evening after they spotted a group of teenagers sitting on the cliff edge with their feet dangling over the drop below on the cliffs just to the east of Freshwater.

A group of six officers from West Bay Coastguard responded and made their way to the cliffs.

Once on the scene, two leading officers including the station officer located the group who were still sitting on the edge.

The lead officers took the teenagers away from the cliff edge to a safe place.

The coastguard gave them stern safety advice regarding the dangers of the cliffs before they left the area.

The coastguard has issued a safety warning regarding the cliffs following the incident.

A spokesperson for West Bay Coastguard said: “The cliffs at Burton stand at around 138 feet with a sheer drop and a trip or fall over the edge would likely have lethal consequences.

“Our coastline is an ever changing environment an cliff erosion is a part of this.

“This can result in cliff instability, cliff falls and landslides without warning.

“Coastguard advice in this area remains very simple. Stay away from the cliff edge and avoid walking directly under our cliffs.”

The coastguard also wanted to thank the member of the public who called 999 to alert them to the incident.
