IT’S a dog’s life – sitting comfortably and touring the country.

This is Oscar the golden retriever, who is accompanying his owner on a 5,000-mile fundraising cycle ride across the UK.

Maggie Scorer and her furry eight-year-old companion arrived in Bridport last week as part of their tour.

Maggie, a gGrandmother of eight Maggie, has spent nearly 150 days cycling to raise £25,000 for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal charity, and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Both Maggie and Oscar have travelled about 4,500 miles during that time and are now on the final leg of their challenge.

As Maggie cycles, Oscar sits in a specially designed ‘doggie ride’ attached to the back of her bike.

Maggie said: “We have had a massive adventure. Oscar continues to be in fine fettle and has had some lovely walks plus swims in the sea.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported me, come out to cheer Oscar and me on and provided us with a place to stay. It has been brilliant and certainly keeps me pedalling on to the end.”

The dynamic duo’s journey began in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. They travelled along the east coast, anti-clockwise, and recently reached Lands End. They will now continue east to Suffolk.

Speaking to the Echo, Maggie said: “I have four weeks to go. I’ve been ahead of schedule. I can’t believe it.”

“I’ve been so focused on looking where I’m going the next day, now I’m thinking, ‘Gosh, in four weeks I’m looking at going home’.

“I can’t believe I’ve gone where I’ve cycled. It’s amazing, really.”

Carolyn Bray, Sands fundraising manager, said: “For Maggie and Oscar to take on this mammoth challenge for both charities is amazing." We cannot thank them enough for what they have done so far and wish them all the best on the last part of their journey.”

Caitlin O’Neill, of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, said: “We are incredibly grateful for (Maggie’s) support and hope she and Oscar enjoy the last leg of their epic cycle before a well-deserved homecoming celebration.”

Maggie and Oscar will visit Dorchester today for a couple of days.
