PASSIONATE calls have been made for urgent improvements on a 'notorious' stretch of the A35 after another fatal car crash.

There have been three fatal crashes between Charmouth and Axminster on the A35 since February.

In the latest collision, a 78-year-old man from Poole was killed after a blue Volkswagen Polo and a blue Mercedes lorry, collided on the A35 at Raymonds Hill on the Dorset/Devon border.

Campaigners are demanding action on the ‘notoriously dangerous’ road, and have gained the backing of two local MPs.

Cllr Joy Raymond, from Axminster Town Council, said: “It’s a notoriously dangerous road.

“We really need something to be done quickly to alleviate the problems.

“I really do think it is time to consider installing a dual carriageway around that part of the road or building a bypass.

"It is now getting beyond reason and we need something to be done urgently. I really do fear what will happen there over the summer.”

The latest crash comes after it was revealed by the Dorset Echo that more than one person a day is killed or seriously injured on roads in the county, with figures reaching a record high of 392 last year.
West Dorset MP Oliver Letwin has called for A35 improvements from Bridport to the Devon border.

“This was another ghastly reminder of the need for increased safety measures along this part of the A35,” said Mr Letwin.

“Speeds on the stretch through to Bridport are also being worked on, but it is clear that we need to look at the whole of the route from the Devon border.”

Neil Parish, MP for Tiverton and Honiton, supported the calls adding:“It's a tragedy there has been another fatal accident on this stretch of road.

“I am currently in contact with both Highways England and the local councils to find a long-term solution at this junction. I remain steadfast in my determination to get the safety improvements needed at Hunters Lodge.”

Highways England are proposing reducing the speed limit to improve safety.

A spokesman for Highways England, said: “Safety is always a priority and we are continuing to work up a final design for safety improvements at the Hunters Lodge junction which includes new signs, including electronic signs to warn A35 traffic of right turn movements, and lining improvements to better direct traffic."

“We are also proposing an extension to the present 40mph speed limit west of Raymonds Hill which is aimed at slowing traffic before it reaches the junction and a new signalised pedestrian crossing sited just east Crewkerne Road.”
