THIS week’s Weymouth Go Spike League saw the first ‘King of the Beach’ event of the season.

In this competition the eight highest-ranked players during May play with a different partner in each match and the individual who scores the most game points on the night is the winner.

An extremely strong wind blew throughout the evening which meant controlling the ball was exceptionally difficult .

And it was probably not a surprise that the most experienced player of the eight, Rob Semmence, ended up coming out on top by just two points.

Carl Neale achieved his best placing by finishing second with Craig Bishop third and Ali Mitchell fourth.

The evening’s B series competition saw 10 teams battling it out and the final again came down to a clash between the most experienced players in the competition, Martin O’ Neill and his partner Dan Buss, and Mike Clark and Matt Palmer.

The match was very tight with both teams playing controlled volleyball, but, in the end, O’ Neill and Buss ran out 15-13 winners.

The competition resumes on Tuesday evening and anyone is welcome.

Report to the permanent courts between 6pm and 6.30pm.

There is also a coaching session for women on Wednesday evening at the same time.
