THE RESIDENTS of Bridport, West Bay and Lyme Regis will welcome a trio of truly intrepid fundraisers on a trek with a twist.

Daz Whitehead, Tony Dwight and Paul Tindall will be circumnavigating the country on lawnmowers to raise cash for Crohn’s and Colitis UK.

The three friends have turned their backs on the more traditional forms of trekking and have chosen to travel by lawnmower instead.

Supported throughout the week by three motorcyclists and a van, they will be travelling more than 15,000 miles in seven days starting from Tenbury Wells in Wales.

Their journey will take them through Anglesey, Glasgow, Newcastle, King’s Lynn, Dartford, Southampton, Wimborne, West Bay, Exeter and Bude before they return to their starting point.

Daz and Tony from the North West Lawn Mower Racing Association, and Paul from Mower Madness, were inspired to fundraise for the charity because Tony’s relatives, Daz, and several other members of the racing association team suffer from the diseases.

Mr Dwight said: “We all like challenges and we are looking forward to it.

“I hope we get good weather during the week because when we did the first run we were driving through hail, sleet, rain. It was absolutely horrible.”

The group hope this year’s trip will be even more successful than their previous fundraising John O’Groats to Lands’ End adventure the Long Way Down, which raised more than £3,500 for charity.

More than 20 sponsors have already offered help, equipment and accommodation to enable them to complete the charity challenge, but they still urgently need help with other costs like fuel.

Mr Dwight added: “Crohn’s and colitis are diseases that not many people have heard of, but many people have got them and there’s no known cure.

He said the conditions affect sufferers’ health and quality of life considerably as only their symptoms can be relieved and doctors don’t know how to stop what’s causing it.

“Anything that people can do to help these people would be really appreciated,” he said.

The group’s trip takes place from July 11 to 17, and they will be passing through Bridport and Lyme Regis on the last day from 7 to 8am.
